The Red Star, also known as Red Sexlink, is a hybrid layer chicken specifically developed for efficient egg production. Red Star hens are celebrated for their consistent, prolific laying, making them a top choice among backyard poultry keepers and commercial egg producers alike.

Characterized by their rich reddish-brown plumage and calm temperament, Red Stars are medium-sized birds with a sleek, productive build. Hens typically weigh 5-6 pounds at maturity. They adapt well to various climates and housing conditions, whether free-ranged or kept in more confined environments.

These hens begin laying early - typically around 18 to 20 weeks of age - and continue to produce large brown eggs reliably throughout their peak laying period. Known for their excellent feed-to-egg conversion, Red Stars are both economical and dependable layer chickens. On average, a healthy Red Star hen can lay up to 300 or more large brown eggs per year, making this hybrid breed one of the most efficient and productive egg layers available today.

The sex-linked genetics of Red Stars provide a practical advantage: day-old chicks can be sexed by color, with pullets showing reddish-brown down and cockerels appearing lighter yellow. This makes it easy to order exactly what you need for egg production.

Red Stars from Stumphouse Farms are a practical choice for those seeking a low-maintenance, high-output layer chicken. Their friendly demeanor and reliable performance have earned them a favored place in flocks across the country, from small family farms to larger egg operations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Red Star Chickens

Red Stars are hybrid chickens bred specifically for maximum egg production, while Rhode Island Reds are a heritage breed used for both eggs and meat. Red Stars lay more eggs (300+ vs 200-280 per year) and start laying earlier (18-20 weeks vs 20-24 weeks), but Rhode Island Reds are better for dual-purpose use if you also want meat birds.

Yes, but Red Stars are bred primarily for egg production rather than meat. They have a leaner build compared to meat chickens or dual-purpose breeds. Most people keep Red Stars for eggs and harvest them as stewing hens once laying slows down after 2-3 years.

Sex-linked means you can tell male from female chicks at hatch by their color. Female Red Star chicks have reddish-brown down, while males are lighter yellow. This makes it easy to order just pullets (females) for egg production without paying for sexing.

Red Stars are excellent for beginners. They're hardy, friendly, low-maintenance, and start laying earlier than most breeds. Their consistent egg production and calm temperament make them ideal for first-time chicken keepers who want reliable results without complicated care requirements.

Red Star hens are medium-sized birds, typically weighing 5-6 pounds at maturity. Roosters (which are uncommon since most people order pullets) weigh 6-7 pounds. Their moderate size makes them suitable for standard chicken coops without requiring excessive space.

Red Stars lay large brown eggs. The eggs are a medium to dark brown color and consistently large, making them popular for both home use and local egg sales.
